As if government agencies function well now. While they may be able to use their computers from home, if the networks hold up under increased traffic, how are phone systems going to function? Is Your Employer Prepared For A Bird Flu Pandemic?

As more businesses become aware of a potential bird flu pandemic, many smaller companies have no plan in effect and are maintaining a wait and see attitude. Your business or company may have anywhere from 30-60% of the employees out sick, or out to take care of ill family members.

A bird flu pandemic could last for weeks or months at a time. You may be out of work for several months. You may want to start taking some measures now so you are prepared for being out of work and loss of income.

You need to ask your employer how they will be handling a pandemic crisis. What will their policies be? How are they going to provide a healthy work environment so that it will minimize the spread of the flu? How is your health insurance? Does it need to be updated? Will they offer additional sick time or paid leave of absence? Can you get a wage or salary advance or partial advance? Who will fill in for you, if you are out sick or need to stay home with family members who are ill? Are your co-workers crossed trained? What happens if you need to stay home with your children because schools are closed? Can your business run with 50% of employees out sick? What happens if the business needs to shut down completely? How do they plan on communicating with employees who are at home? Are there options for working at home? What if you need to leave the area to go somewhere safer? Will you have a job when you return? These are the type of questions you need to start asking today before a bird flu pandemic.

You will want to make copies of your employment agreements, health and life insurance policies and other employee documents including investment plans, stock options and other benefits. If we enter a pandemic and you need to stay home and be out of work for several months, you may want to consider tapping into any investment plans to find available cash to carry you through. A global influenza pandemic will have catastrophic consequences worldwide that will affect your business, career, investments, home, family and community. Stay informed about the bird flu and start planning for a possible pandemic.

In the past few weeks it seem that more officials are waking up to the fact that a global pandemic could be much more serious than first thought. In January the World Bank predicted a global pandemic lasting 12 weeks would cost the world economy $800 billion dollars. They have now uped that to 2 trillion dollars. More businesses, government officials and the medical community are realizing just how upprepared they are. From the funeral industry wondering how they would cope with an overflow of bodies to internet services wondering how they would handle the millions of people trying to work from home. The good news is there has only been a relativly small number of human cases and no large clusters of human to human transmissions. But the cluster of 7 family members in Indonesia it proved one thing and that is the h5n1 virus does have the ability to mutate. And if it is given an opportunity, it will do it again, possibly into a form that is even more easily passed from person to person. And when that happens then everyones worst fears may come true.

While h2h has not been confirmed in the cluster of 7 family members who died in Indonesia, what is worrisome is the difficulty in determining that. Here is the first cluster of possible human to human transmission of bird flu and they are having a real difficult time explaining it. Which makes you wonder what may be going on in other parts of the world that have yet to be discovered or reported. We hear very little from Africa. China may be covering up how many cases get reported. News out of Indonesia describing the earthquake say how poor the medical care is for the survirors. In a country with a substandard healthcare system, how can we expect them to stay on top of bird flu?

Bird flu continues to spread in Europe and other countries. It is now in 31 countries and shows no let up in the speed that it is spreading. The good news is we are not seeing large number of human infections and no evidence yet of human to human transmission. But with the continued spread and more chances of humans being exposed the possibility of the virus mutating also increases. If that happens a flu pandemic will spread around the world within 3 months. A vaccine will take up to six months to be ready and then who knows how long to get it into high volume production and distributed?

How do you replace trained factory workers in Asia and key managment employees in large companies who may of died? What about small businesses that won't be able to open their doors because they couldn't survive 12 weeks without customers? What about millions of people who had no income for weeks and can't pay their bills? The markets will not recover overnight. The economic consequences of a pandemic will be catastrophic.

Already they are displaying larger quanties of non-perishable foods and running specials like 10 for $10. The question will be is how long to stock up for. This news certainly may explain why we have not seen more human cases of bird flu. While bird flu continues to spread some of the things we are not seeing include no human cases in Africa, no cases in other bird other than poultry, swans, turkeys. We haven't seen millions of pigeons drop from the sky. And other than a few cats and a weasle we have not seen it spread to other mammals. 186 people infected since 2003 and only about 30 of those from the first of the year have died. If local and state officials would all get on the same page and tell people how serious a pandemic could be there will be a lot less problems and panic when it does hit.

Don’t Bury Your Head in the Sand Concerning Bird Flu

Seems like a lot of people are taking a wait and see attitude concerning bird flu and the potential for a global pandemic. To them it is just another “the sky is falling” scare tactic. It is not a lead story on the 5 o’clock news or a front page headline. Even the experts are not sure where it is going. They freely admit they don’t know everything about the virus or when or if it will mutate into a form that is easily passed from person to person. But most of them agree it will happen, they just don’t know when. Which gives us the luxury of time to prepare. Since the beginning of the year we have seen the rapid spread of bird flu from Asia to Africa, Europe, India and the Middle East. It has killed wild birds, infected poultry stocks and has been found in other mammals such as cats. With increased exposure comes increased risk of the virus mutating into a form that will be passed from person to person.

Already we have seen the economic consequences from those connected to the poultry industry. Sales of chickens are down 85% in some countries in Africa. People are losing money and jobs over this. Local and state officials are putting plans in place but no one is sure what will happen or how to cope with it. There are still too many questions on the table.

When do critical decisions about limiting transportation or shutting down schools or businesses get made? Your local official may tell you to stock up on food and water for 5 days and wash your hands. A pandemic could keep you housebound for months. What happens when millions of people stay home from work out of fear of contacting bird flu? The economic consequences of a global pandemic will be catastrophic. Every day another state or city is making plans to prepare for a pandemic but fear and panic can quickly blow those plans out of the water. And for those who have had their heads in the sand and don’t consider bird flu a big deal will be caught off guard. When the first case of human-to-human transmission is confirmed in the US, grocery stores will have their shelves cleared within hours. Every ATM will be emptied of available cash. State and Local officials will be scratching their heads and saying “we didn’t plan for this” And then there will be the finger pointing and the blame game but by then it will be too late.

By starting to prepare now you can eliminate fear and panic and have a plan in place for you and your family. When human-to-human transmission is confirmed the luxury of having the time to prepare will end.

Will FEMA Make House Calls During a Bird Flu Pandemic?

In the event of a major bird flu pandemic, just how will the federal government help? We saw how food and supplies were delivered during hurricane Katrina. Now imagine millions of people housebound because of the bird flu. Businesses and schools are closed. Millions are ill. Interstate commerce is interrupted and food distribution chain has broken down. Grocery stores only have 3-5 day inventory. What happens when people who didn't stock their pantry before they became housebound, or run out of food and fresh water?

Will FEMA or another agency make house calls? You can't have hundreds of people standing in line in a parking lot to get food and water. That would defeat the whole purpose of quarantining people at home to prevent the spread of avian influenza. The governments own website pandemicflu.gov doesn't really give any good answers. Their list of items to stock up on is pretty short given people could be at home for months at a time.

It has always been recommended to keep 3 days of supplies on hand to survive a natural disaster. We have seen how the federal government handles natural disasters. The above scenario isn't for 3 days or 3 weeks. It might last up to 3 years.

How would you survive at home for 3 years if you couldn't leave your house? Couldn't go to a grocery store? Had love ones that were sick? You need to stay informed about a possible bird flu pandemic and learn how to provide for yourself and your family. It may not happen in the near future but health experts say it will happen.

Start today preparing for a possible bird flu pandemic and if it happens you won't need to divert your time and energy away from caring for your family, waiting in long lines for essential goods and services or waiting for the government or other organizations to come to your rescue.

Warned and unprepared FEMA could be put to the test again even before June 1 if the avian flu virus spreading around the globe suddenly mutates into a form easily transmitted among humans.

During the 1918 influenza pandemic, officials feared if they told the truth the public would panic. When accurate information is withheld for the public good it usually ends up doing just the opposite. With bird flu spreading but not yet a person to person virus we are already seeing evidence of not telling the public for their own good what is going on.
